Black Film Fest takes ‘All’

By Geoff Berkshire

Proving some marriages are strong enough to survive even the indie filmmaking process, husband-and-wife teams reigned supreme at the closing ceremonies of the fourth Hollywood Black Film Festival on Sunday.

The jury award for feature film went to “All About You,” written and directed by Christine Swanson and produced by husband Michael. Romantic comedy deals with a young woman looking for a fresh start after realizing she’s not included in her corporate-climber boyfriend’s rise to the top.

“Flight of the Bumble Bee,” written by Linda Hamblin Denton and directed by husband Rayce Denton, took the audience choice award. Film tells the story of a young thug trying to go straight who is forced into a bizarre relationship with an abused woman.

Anthony Alleyne’s comedy “The Booth” won top honors in the short film competition; “Voting While Black” grabbed top honors in the student film category. Top docu honors went to “Keeping the Faith With Morrie,” produced by Angel Harper and written and directed by Ashley Rogers.

The Hollywood Black Film Festival aims to enhance the careers of black filmmakers in North America through a public exhibition and competition program, and to bring independent works by black filmmakers to Southern California auds.

Fest screened a record 80 films Feb. 5-10 at the Harmony Gold Preview House in Los Angeles.
